Stippling versus Pointillism, what's the difference?

What is Stippling?

The art of drawing using numerous small dots (black) to create an image. The dots are strategical placed to create depth, form and contrast. Using value technique creates shadow and dimension within the piece. Several of the masters used stippling, including Leonardo da Vinci and Rembrandt.

What is Pointillism?

Pointillism is an art technique that consists of using primary color dots (red, yellow, blue). The different colors are then optically “mixed” directly on the canvas instead of on an artist palette to create different colors. Therefore, color theory knowledge and understanding are very important in creating pointillism.
